Practice is defined as the actual application of an idea, belief or method as opposed to theories about the application use
Repeated exercise in or performance of an activity or skill so as to acquire or maintain proficiency in it

The aspect of practice should be viewed from a mentor program and mentor relationship perspective
Some of the practices that are part of a mentor program would include answering the following questions: 1) what is the business problem we are trying to solve with mentoring, 2) how would we measure success, 3) what is the structure of the program, 4) what are the plans for training, 5) what is the marketing and communication strategy, 6) need for mentor movement assessment, 7) celebration of success, 8) implementation strategy - pilot vs full
Practice as it pertains to the actual mentoring relationship would focus on the tools required to be an effective mentor and their application in a mentoring situation
Some of that may include: 1) building trusted relationships, 2) communicating effectively, 3) demonstrating empathy, 4) understanding when to refer to a professional resource (i.e. grief counselor)
The standards would drive what is being delivered and the practice would be how it is being applied

Understand the differences between practices and standards is the first step
The mentoring relationship must be conducted according to the practices and standards that have been developed
This would apply whether the mentoring is being done as part of a formal mentor program or if it is being done outside of that arena
Guide by asking a series of questions to guide the mentee to the answer they are searching for
It easier to just “tell” rather than take the time to guide - enhancing critical thinking skills along the journey
Reflection is a tool that we can use in this case to make sure that we are following the practices and standards that have been developed
Reflection is a two way process in that one should reflect forwards to visualize what the session could look like and perhaps even the questions that might come out of the conversation
Visualize how you might respond to that conversation
At the end of each session you would reflect back over the time you spent together and ask, 1) what went well and why, 2) what didn’t go well and why, and 3) what we will do differently next time
Reflect on the process, and the practices and standards to ensure that you are bringing value to the mentor arrangement
